SHENANDOAH, Texas – Through four events held on the first night of the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championship, Kenyon College holds an early lead in the team standings. With thanks to its trio of top sprinters, the Lords amassed 110 first-place team points.
Of the Lords' 110 points, 43 came from a strong trio of sprinters in the men's 50-yard freestyle. Senior Curtis Ramsey led the way with the Lords' highest finish of the evening, taking third overall in the race and touching the wall in 19.95 seconds for 16 team points. Junior Ian Richardson rounded out the top-five with a finish time of 20.15 seconds, while senior Ian Stewart-Bates added to his incredible career with a sixth-place finish. The triad's set of finishes propelled the Lords past Denison for an early lead, which they held to the close of the night's events.
Stewart-Bates' sixth-place finish earned him his 17th career All-American honor, leading all members of the Lords' team. Ramsey hit double digits with his 10th All-American award of his career.
Supporting Kenyon's first-place spot after the opening day of action, the combination of Andrew Chevalier and Joe Guilfoyle took sixth and seventh, respectively, in the men's 500-yard freestyle. Chevalier timed in at 4:29.35, while Guilfoyle hit the wall just over a second later.
Kenyon's 200-yard medley relay team consisting of Jimmy Chapman, Alex Beckwith, Ryan Funk, and Richardson concluded the men's day with a fourth-place finish, reeling in 30 points to maintain the Lords' overall lead.
