LANCASTER, Pa. – Senior
Mackie Avis scored three times and classmate
Chris Pappalardo dealt four assists Tuesday, but that wasn't enough for the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team to get a win against Franklin & Marshall College. The Diplomats used six straight goals to break open a close game and claimed an 11-7 victory.
Kenyon took control for most of the opening half. Avis netted the first goal on an assist from Pappalardo. The Diplomats responded with three straight, but Kenyon followed with a run of its own. Sophomore
Justin Coleman scored the final goal of the first quarter and classmate Nicky Lenard tallied the first of the second. After that, Avis pumped in two more and put Kenyon ahead, 5-3, with 7:28 left on the clock. Pappalardo was credited with the assists on three of those goals in the Lords' four-goal surge.
A few moments later, the game swayed once again and this time in favor of Franklin & Marshall, which scored the last four goals of the half and moved in front 7-5 at the break. Each one of those seven Diplomat goals was scored by a different player.
Franklin & Marshall, which ended up out-shooting Kenyon 42-20 for the game, created a little more breathing room for itself in the third quarter by outscoring the Lords, 2-0. Goals from Billy Kempner and Brendan Kenavan gave the Diplomats a 9-5 advantage. Kempner was the only Franklin & Marshall player to record two or more goals and Philip Gamble was the only one to have two or more assists.
Kenyon (1-4) inched a little closer in the fourth quarter with a score from Phil Alimam, who also scored the Lords' final goal of the game. In between those two, the Diplomats (2-1) fired in two of their own to maintain at least a four-goal margin.
Junior goalkeeper
Fletcher Franklin saw a lot of action in front of the Kenyon net and wound up making 11 saves. He now has 52 saves on the season and 9.40 goals against average. He, as well as the rest of the Lords, will try to get back on the winning track Monday, when they head to Mount Berry, Georgia to battle the Berry College Vikings. Last season, the Lords were an 8-5 winner over Berry.
