GAMBIER, Ohio –Carlo Gagliardo continued to expunge previous top marks in the Kenyon College record books with a pair of record-breaking performances on the first day of the 2013 North Coast Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships. The junior set new standards in both Wilder Track and College history in multiple sprint events to lead the way for a handful of finals qualifiers on the Lords track and field team.
Gagliardo not only won his 100- and 200-meter preliminary heats that qualify him for the finals, set for tomorrow afternoon, but he broke the College and track records in each, as well. The junior spearheaded his way into the Kenyon record books by breaking the tape in the 100-meter dash in 10.91 seconds. His finish broke a record held by Dondrea Brown (10.94) that stood since 2007. It also marked the third different event that Gagliardo now holds a program record in. He also finished first in the 200-meter dash preliminary by crossing the line in 22.03, thus breaking his own record of 22.10 set earlier this year at the Kenyon College Invitational on April 20.
Also qualifying for Saturday's 100-meter dash final was senior Jake Fishbein. He finished third in his heat and seventh overall with a time of 11.20 to advance.
Joining the trio in his respective final is freshman Ulises Arbelo who finished third in the final heat of the 800-meter run. He clocked in a time of 1:59.62 to serve as the final qualifier for Saturday's race.
Leading the way for Kenyon in Friday's field events was Lucas Herweyer, who participated in the men's shot put and discus throw. The sophomore scored two points for the Lords with his seventh place finish in the shot put, registering a top throw of 13.05 meters. He also placed ninth in the discus with a best toss of 38.71 meters.
After the close of the first day of this year's NCAC Championships, the Lords are ninth out of nine teams with four total points. Two points carried over from Brett Williams' seventh-place finish in the men's decathlon at last week's Multi-Event Championship. Wabash College currently leads the field by a wide margin with its 84.50 points. Ohio Wesleyan University stands in a distant second place with 49.50 points.
Action will resume from Wilder Track with 30 total events, 15 on the men's side, yet to be decided. The first final of the day will begin at 10 a.m. when the men's hammer throw and women's javelin throw commence. The first running event will take place at 2:30 p.m. with the men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
