SINGLES REUSLTS l
DOUBLES RESULTS
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Monday morning Kenyon College sophomore
Sam Geier became the first player in Lords' tennis history to win the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Central Region singles championship. Geier, the tournament's No. 21 seed, took the crown by winning seven straight matches without dropping a set.
Geier's run covered a span of four days. He opened tournament play Friday with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Washington University's Kevin Chu. Next up was a 6-0, 7-6 win over John Daseke from DePauw University. Saturday then saw Geier rip through Casey Cempre and Josh Cogan from Denison University and Washington, respectively. He played two more matches Sunday to set himself up for the Monday morning championship match. In Sunday's quarterfinal, he knocked off Eric Klawitter from Case Western Reserve University by identical 7-5 scores. Then, in Sunday's semifinal, he matched up against Jeremy Bush, also from Washington, and the tournament's No. 14-seeded player. Geier won that battle 7-6, 6-1.
Finally, on Monday morning Geier was pitted against the tournament's No. 3 seed, Deepak Sabada from the University of Chicago. Sabada threatened twice to take a set from Geier, but Geier held on both times and captured a 7-5, 7-6 championship win. The title brings with it automatic All-America status for Geier.
Although Geier was the first Kenyon male to win the Central Region singles title, Michael Greenberg previously accomplish the same feat, but in a different region. In 2009, Greenberg received an exemption to participate in the Midwest Regional, instead of the Central, and went on to claim that title.
Freshman Peter Dakich also turned in a strong singles run for the Lords. He whipped up three straight wins before falling to Klawitter in the fourth round. Junior
Tim Rosensteel and sophomores
Tristan Kaye and
Robert Turlington, all won two matches before being eliminated.
In doubles play, Geier had some success as well. He paired up with Kaye to win a couple matches before exiting the tournament. The Kenyon duo first registered an 8-2 win over Lawrence Palmer and Andy Wall from Augustana College. In round two, Geier and Kaye rattled off another 8-2 win, this time against Juan Mena and Tyler Strong from Wittenberg University. In the third round, the Kenyon team stretched its opponents from Case Western Reserve to the limit, but ended up on the wrong side of a 9-7 decision. That doubles team from Case, which included Klawitter and C.J. Kimbrill, was the tournament's No. 6 seed.
Another Kenyon doubles team matched the run of Geier and Kaye. Rosensteel and classmate
Colin Haas, seeded fourth, picked up a pair of wins before falling in the third round. The two paired up to post an 8-4 win over Otterbein University's David Seckel and William Willson. In round two, they defeated Allegheny College's Alex Hurtek and Sam Stephenson by an 8-5 score.
The ITA tournament concluded Kenyon's fall schedule. The Lords, who finished the 2012-13 season ranked as the No. 5 team in the nation, will not compete again until the spring.
