Ladies tame Tigers while Hall rings up records

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – With Saturday's 5-2 win over host Wittenberg University, the Kenyon College Ladies maintained sole possession of first place in the North Coast Athletic Conference field hockey standings and inched a little bit closer to capturing the program's first conference crown since the 2007 season.

The Ladies (14-2 overall, 10-1 NCAC) received a goal and an assist from both Julie Freedman and Shannon Hart. Weezie Foster, Maddie Breschi, and Rachel Hall, who is now a Kenyon record-holder, tallied the other Kenyon goals.

Foster scored the game's first goal using an assist from Hart. That, however, would be the only goal of the first half for the Ladies. Wittenberg (8-8 overall, 6-5 NCAC) answered back twice as Carlijn van den Berg solved the Kenyon defense to put her Tigers ahead, 2-1. Her first goal was scored with 2:18 left in the first half and her second was scored 1:43 into the second half.

About five minutes after van den Berg's run ended, Hart scored the equalizer for Kenyon off an assist from senior Cecilia Depman. That sparked two more goals from the Ladies within the next four minutes of play. Breschi scored what would be the game-winner on an assist from Freedman and Freedman added her own tally to give the Ladies a 4-1 advantage with a little less than 25 minutes left in the contest.

The goal for Breschi, a junior, was her 11th of the season and the 33rd of her career. She now ranks fifth all-time among the program's leading goal-scorers and ranks third all-time in points (84). Freedman, a senior who is having the best offensive year of her collegiate career, now has seven goals this season and a team-leading seven assists.

The icing on the cake for Kenyon was supplied by Hall, a senior who fired home the final goal with a little less than a minute left on the clock. That goal gave Hall the Ladies' all-time career record. Her total of 42 career goals surpassed the previous record of 41 set by Carrie Moore '99 and it also gave Hall 101 career points, which surpassed Moore's previous record of 100.

The Ladies now turn their attention to a rematch with Denison University, the only NCAC team to defeat Kenyon this season. The Kenyon women will have a week to prepare for that contest, which will start at 11 a.m. Saturday in Granville, Ohio.
