Senior Austin Caldwell swam a leg on five winning relays teams and helped the Lords take
first place overall in the season-opening Kenyon Relays. Four of those five wins came alongÂ
with meet-record times.RESULTSGAMBIER, Ohio – The defending national champion Kenyon College Lords picked up right where they left off last year. Saturday at the James A. Steen Aquatic, the Lords swimming and diving team scored 124 points, broke four meet records, and placed first in the annual, season-opening Kenyon College Relays.
There were eight different scored relay events held at Kenyon and two diving relay events held at Denison University. The Lords won seven of the eight swimming events, while Denison took the other swim event and the two diving events. The Big Red wound up in second place in the final standings with a team score of 112. The College of Wooster was third with 52 points, Ohio Northern University was fourth with 50 points, and Wittenberg University completed the top five with 38 points.
Senior
Austin Caldwell was the top performer for Kenyon. He swam a leg in five of the Kenyon relay wins, including all four that set meet records. He first joined
Ryan Funk,
Trevor Manz, and
Harrison Curley for a meet record 1:32.72 in the 200-yard medley relay. He then teamed up with Funk,
Percy Gates, and
Joey Duronio for a meet record 4:01.97 in the 500-yard crescendo relay. Next up was a meet record 1:30.91 in the 200-yard butterfly, an event he swam with Funk,
Wes Manz, and
Christian Josephson. Finally, the fourth and final meet record came in the 400-yard individual medley. In that race, Caldwell teamed with
Wes Manz,
Trevor Manz, and
Ian Reardon to produce a time of 3:32.10.
The Lords' other wins came in the 200-yard backstroke relay (1:33.50), the 200-yard butterfly relay (1:30.91), the 1,500-yard freestyle relay (14:10.28), and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:23.70).
Funk ended up swimming on four of those winning teams, while Gates, Curley, both Manz brothers, and Duronio each collected two wins. The 1,500 was won by sophomore
Arthur Conover, senior
Joe Guilfoyle, and freshman
David Perez.
Kenyon has some time off before its next meet, which will be at The Ohio State University on Friday, October 31.
