For the second consecutive weekend, the Kenyon College men's soccer team will welcome a trio of other teams for the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament. Sectionals, or more commonly known as the Sweet 16 and elite eight rounds, will see the likes of rival Ohio Wesleyan University, Christopher Newport University (Newport News, VA), and Whitworth University (Spokane, WA) come to Mavec Field.
The Lords are 18-1-2 after defeating Heidelberg 3-0 in the first round and winning 3-0 in penalty kicks over Thomas More College. The OWU Battling Bishops (16-4-3) rallied to beat Penn State-Behrend 3-2 in overtime before advancing past Calvin College in penalty kicks. Christopher Newport, a member of the Capital Athletic Conference, boasts an 18-3-4 mark. The Captains nipped Lynchburg College 1-0 in the first round before rallying from a 2-0 deficit against Stevens Institute of Technology and advancing with a 4-2 victory. Rounding out the Sweet 16 participants is Whitworth (17-1-3), a member of the Northwest Conference. Their road to Gambier started last weekend in Atlanta, Ga., when the Pirates defeated Covenant College 1-0 and then won 2-0 over Berry College.
Kenyon will play Ohio Wesleyan at 11 a.m. with the Christopher Newport/Whitworth match starting at 1:30.
