INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.  – With the aid of a pair of second-place finishes by its relay teams and a silver-medal performance by diver Maria Zarka, the Kenyon College women's swimming and diving team leapfrogged rival Denison University for third place at the NCAA Division III Championships. After day two, Emory University maintains its lead heading into Friday.
The Ladies trailed the Big Red by just two points entering Thursday's finals, but it was not until the latter stages of the evening that Kenyon made its move. Kenyon took advantage of the fact that Denison had zero participants in the one-meter dive, where Maria Zarka helped complete the jump. The sophomore went into her final dive with a lead of less than two points over Macalester College's Renee Jordan. Zarka's final routine included a reverse, single somersault with a one-and-a-half twist, which scored her a 46.80 to tabulate a final count of 463.05 points. However, Jordan's final dive reeled in 54.00 points making for a 5.85 point differential for first place.
With Zarka's second-place finish, Kenyon jumped into third over Denison by three points, 179-176, while only trailing Johns Hopkins University (192) by 13.
The Ladies increase their lead over Denison by two more points with a second-place finish to close out the night in the 400-yard medley relay. The race came down to Johns Hopkins' squad and Kenyon's tandem of Celia Oberholzer, Katie Kaestner, Jourdan Cline, and Hillary Yarosh. Kenyon possessed a two-second lead over the Blue Jays' foursome, but the battle between each team's anchors favored Johns Hopkins' Anastasia Bogdanovski who made up the ground and then some. The Ladies placed second with a time of 3:43.34.
Cline and Yarosh also comprised half of the second place 200-yard freestyle relay team that kicked off the night. Johns Hopkins (1:32.38) once again came out the victor, but the Ladies' 1:32.81 finish time garnered 34 points to help close the gap on Denison.
Cline also added a top-five finish on an individual basis in the 100-yard butterfly. The junior bested her preliminary time by four-tenths of a second, touching the wall in 55.70. Wheaton College sophomore Kirsten Nitz set a new NCAA record in the event (52.64) en route to winning the race.
Yarosh also hit the lanes on her own in the 200-yard freestyle. She entered the competition as the second seed in the event and in a tight race, finished third by less than one-quarter of a second after being outtouched by Williams College's Sarah Thompson.
With the competition half complete, Kenyon (213) now sits in third place behind first-place Emory (273) and Johns Hopkins (232). Denison rests behind Kenyon with 208 points while Williams rounds out the top-five with 140 points.
Day three will feature the 200 fly, 100 breast, and 100 backstroke events with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and the final commencing at 6 p.m.
