Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Myers topples Titans with late goal

GAMBIER, Ohio – In NCAA Tournament first-round action Saturday, a late goal from sophomore Henry Myers lifted the Kenyon College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the defensive-minded Westminster College Titans. The win was Kenyon's tenth in a row and propelled the Lords into the second round of national tournament for the third consecutive season.

Kenyon (18-1-0) was relentless on the attack, but quality shots were difficult to come by as Westminster did a good job of clogging up the zone. The Lords wound up with a total of 17 shots for the game, however, just five of those shots were on goal.

At the other end of the field, Westminster (11-6-4) managed just one shot.

Kenyon finally cracked the Titan defense in the game's 86th minute. Senior Jeremiah Barnes played a short pass to junior Dalton Eudy, who was just outside the box. Eudy looked to his left and lobbed a pass to Myers. Myers then out-jumped a Westminster defender and headed the ball into the upper right corner of the Titans' net. The goal, which was scored from about ten yards out, was Myers' fourth of the season. The assist was Eudy's third.

Those same two players connected on a similar goal in the Lords' last game, a 3-2 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University in championship match of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament.

About ten minutes before the Kenyon goal was registered, Westminster had its best offensive opportunity. With the ball being booted around the Kenyon box, Westminster sophomore Fedja Smajic got a foot on it and took an awkward shot at close range. Smajic was not a good position when he uncorked the shot and it sailed to high.

The Lords, currently ranked No. 1 nationally by D#soccer.com and No. 5 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, advance to play the University of Chicago Maroons in the second round. That game will be hosted by Kenyon and will get underway Sunday at 1 p.m. Chicago advanced to the second round with a 3-0 win over Thomas More College.
