GAMBIER, Ohio - The 2015 soccer season came to a close Saturday for the Kenyon College Lords, who dropped a 1-0 contest to the undefeated Calvin College Knights in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The loss snapped the Lords' 12-game undefeated streak and stamped their stellar season with a final record of 19-2-1.
In what was an evenly-played match, one mistake cost the Lords dearly and that mistake occurred in the 84th minute as a bouncing ball found its way between two Kenyon defenders who were bearing down on it. The ball managed to get past both defenders, while Calvin freshman Jacob Witte managed to do the same. Witte squirted through the middle, collected the ball and charged forward to go one-on-one versus
Sam Clougher, the Kenyon keeper. As Clougher advanced, Witte fired his shot into the left side of the Kenyon net.
That goal and the win pushed Calvin (24-0-1) into the NCAA Final Four, which will be held in Kansas City, Missouri on December 4-5.
Kenyon was not without its chances Saturday. In fact, the Lords held a slim 10-7 edge in total shots taken. Their best chance in the first half came in the 12th minute. A ball played near the Calvin goalkeeper's feet was met by a sliding
Josh Lee. His attempt popped up high, however, and was deflected over the crossbar.
Still scoreless in the second half, the Lords created a few more chances. Thirteen minutes into the half,
Oliver Wynn put his head on the ball off a Kenyon corner kick, but his attempt was saved by Niko Giantsopoulus, who ended up making a total of three saves on the day.
Just before the Calvin goal, Wynn had another opportunity. This time his free kick from the left side was smothered by Giantsopoulus.
In between the strikes from Wynn,
Woo Jeon and
David Anderson also had great opportunities for Kenyon. Jeon got loose on a breakaway, but Giantsopoulus came out toward the top of the box and stifled his shot. About nine minutes later, Anderson played a ball that was punched out by Giantsopoulus, but his shot missed wide of the right corner.
The Lords appearance in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament was their first since the 1996 season and their total of 19 wins this season tied a program record originally established by the 1990 team.
David Anderson and the Lords dropped a 1-0 decision to Calvin College on Saturday at Mavec Field.
The loss stopped Kenyon's season one win shy of making the NCAA Final Four.
