SHENANDOAH, Texas – The Kenyon College Ladies opened the NCAA Division III National Championships Wednesday evening and totaled 95 points which put them in third place after day one.

Emory University (Ga.) sits in first with 135.5 points while Denison University is in second with 124 points.

Highlighting the night for the Ladies was the first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Celia Oberholzer, Laura Duncan, Hannah Cooper, and Jenner McLeod formed the national championship squad and set a new NCAA and Kenyon record with a time of 1:40.58. The previous best came from Denison University in 2009 in 1:41.17. For Duncan, Cooper and McLeod, it was their first national championship.

Junior Mariah Williamson had Kenyon's top individual finish of the night when she came in second place in the 500-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 4:49.00. That finish also was the best in Kenyon varsity history and propelled her to a third straight All-American award.

The 200-yard individual medley followed and junior Katie Kaestner finished in 11th clocking in at 2:04.57. That time was the best of the season for the Anacortes, Wash., native.

In the 50-yard freestyle event, McLeod was able to win the consolation final with a time of 23.35. The ninth-place finish also helped McLeod earn her second-straight All-American honor.

After a trio of swimming competitions, Kenyon diving extraordinaire Maria Zarka competed in the three-meter diving event and took third place totaling 463.15 points. It was the first time in Zarka's career that she didn't win that event. She had won it the previous two years.

Day two of NCAA competition will begin tomorrow with preliminary heats starting at 10 a.m. and final heats kicking off at 7 p.m.
