Facebook Photo GallerySHENANDOAH, Texas - Friday, the third day of the four-day NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championship, included just for events for the men and only seven Kenyon College swimmers competed in the evening session. The compact schedule kept points at a premium, but the Lords managed to collect 61 of them and maintained their position atop the team standings.
Four of those seven Kenyon swimmers closed the night out with a second-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team of
Austin Caldwell,
Joey Duronio,
Trevor Manz, and
Arthur Conover clocked in at 6:33.45, a split second behind the time of 6:33.23 posted by the winning relay team from The College of New Jersey.
With Denison University's relay team finishing sixth in that 800, Kenyon was able to extend its overall lead on the second-place Big Red to 88 points. Now, heading into Saturday's final session of the NCAA Championship, Kenyon will carry 348 first-place team points. Denison owns second place with 260 points and Williams College is third with 221 points. Rounding out the top five on the leaderboard are Emory University with 187 points and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with 160 points.
In Friday's individual events, junior
Christian Josephson got the evening started for the Lords. He swam in the consolation final of the 200-yard butterfly and claimed a 15th-place finish with a time of 1:50.22.
In the next event, the 100-yard backstroke, senior
Harrison Curley placed third and established a new Kenyon record of 48.20. Curley first broke the old Kenyon record of 48.61 by turning in a preliminary time of 48.39. He then shaved off another nineteen-hundredths of a second in the finals to reestablish the mark.
The only other event held Friday was the 100-yard breaststroke and Kenyon did not have any swimmers qualify for the consolation or championship heats.
With one day remaining, the Lords are that much closer to obtaining their third-straight and 34th overall NCAA title. Saturday's docket includes four swimming events and one diving event. Preliminary heats start at 11 a.m. and final heats will get underway at 7 p.m. in the Conroe ISD Natatorium.
