Lords’ run ends in national quarterfinals

MEDFORD, Mass. – A shot from the right post by Tufts University's Nathan Majumder trickled into the Kenyon College net and lifted the Jumbos to a 1-0 double-overtime win in the NCAA Tournament's quarterfinal round on Sunday at Bello Field.

The tough ending pushed Kenyon's final record to 20-3, its most wins in program history.

With howling winds for virtually the entire match, neither team really had any clean-cut chances throughout the contest.

In the first half, the Lords were playing against the wind and found just a few attempts. Senior Jordan Glassman headed an attempt 90 seconds in but watched it go wide. Later, Oliver Wynn fired from the right side but his shot went wide right.

On the other side, Tufts' Sterling Weatherbie had his team's best look in the 21st minute, but his attempt came into the arms of Sam Clougher.

Second-half action saw both teams be able to pick up their offensive efforts despite the windy conditions.

About two minutes into the second stanza, Woo Jeon raced into the box and fired but Jumbos keeper Scott Greenwood denied him.

A few minutes later, Tufts had a pair of good opportunities from Zachary Trevorrow and Tyler Kulscsar but both players' shots just went wide of the net.

Kenyon had two more decent looks from Josh Lee and Alberto Carmona in the 61st and 66th minutes, but both went wide left.

After a scoreless 90 minutes, Tufts found the only on-target attempt which came in the 99th minute from Gavin Tasker. However, Clougher was there again to notch another save.

In the second overtime, David Anderson's header a little over a minute in was saved by Greenwood. Brice Koval then added an attempt at the 107:36 mark but that went wide.

The match's lone goal was then scored in the 109th after a throw-in from the right sideline got to Majumder and his shot appeared to deflect and slow-roll into the net.

It was the final game for the careers of Tony Amolo, Dalton Eudy, David Resnekov, Clougher, Glassman, Lee, Grant Cohen, Gabe Freund and Alex Pinkus. Over the last four years, that group helped the Kenyon program attain four straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including four Sweet 16s and a pair of national quarterfinal appearances. They also produced a record of 73-12-6 (.835).
