Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lords win third straight NCAC title

GAMBIER, Ohio – First-year forward Philippe Stengel picked up a long pass from senior keeper Sam Clougher and raced into the Oberlin College box and scored in double-overtime to lift the Kenyon College men's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 win in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament final on Saturday.

It's the third-straight season Kenyon has claimed the NCAC's tourney crown. The last time that happened was 2000-2003 when Ohio Wesleyan University won four in a row.

Like the first game between these teams earlier in the season, the Lords controlled possession but found finishing in the final third to be difficult.

Oberlin struck first blood just 3:44 into the game as Jonah Blume-Kemkes crossed a pass from the right sideline and watched as Sam Weiss kicked it in near the left post. It was the second consecutive game the Lords found themselves down early.

That 1-0 score remained the same until Billy O'Neill found the equalizer for Kenyon in the 30th minute. With O'Neill near the right sideline, he lofted the ball inside the left corner of the goal over the outstretched arms of keeper Koryn Kraemer.

In the second half, the Lords ramped up their chances on the offensive end. Oliver Wynn got a look in the 52nd minute but his header was saved. Stengel got his first on-target look 12 minutes later but Kraemer picked it up by the left post.

Oberlin's best look of the second stanza came to Trenton Bulucea in the 64th minute but Clougher denied him.

After 90 minutes of play, the match went into the first overtime. The Yeomen got the only shot off on goal from Adam Chazin-Gray but nothing came of it.

The contest went into the second overtime where the Lords came through. In the 103rd minute, Stengel scored his third goal of the season, his first game-winner as well, and sent the team and Kenyon fans into a frenzy.

After the match, Stengel was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player while, Bret Lowry, Alberto Carmona and Wynn made the all-tournament team.

Kenyon will now await and see where they'll play in next weekend's NCAA Division III Tournament. The selection show will happen on Monday, November 7 at 1 p.m.
