WAVERLY, Iowa – Making his first appearance in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship, Kenyon College senior
Sam Lagasse placed tenth Saturday in the 5,000-meter race.
Lagasse finished right in the middle of the 19-runner field for the event and crossed the finish line in a time of 15:00.14. That fell short of his season best, but times were a bit on the slow side at Walston-Hoover Stadium on the campus of Wartburg College.
Lagasse's 2016 season-best and Kenyon record time of 14:23.36, set earlier this season, would have won Saturday afternoon's race. Instead, the winning time of 14:24.02 was registered by Ian LaMere of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Lagasse's tenth-place showing came up just 13 seconds short of an eighth-place spot, which would have ensured him All-America status for the season. Nevertheless, Lagasse wrapped up his Kenyon career as a three-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference honoree and Kenyon's record holder for the 3,000, the 5,000 and the 10,000-meter races.
