INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Freshman
Crile Hart and senior
Julia Wilson powered the Kenyon College Ladies back into second place at the conclusion of the third day of the 2018 NCAA Division III Women's Swimming and Diving Championship at Indiana University Natatorium.
Crile sparked the Ladies, once again, by winning her second individual national title of the meet. She put together a strong final 25 yards to pull out the win in the 100-yard backstroke. Cindy Cheng of Emory University, the defending national champion in the event, jumped out to an early lead, but Hart reached down for an extra gear and surpassed Cheng to finish with a winning time of 53.61. Cheng took second in 54.22. The victory made Hart the sixth swimmer in Ladies' history to capture the backstroke title. The last to do so was Celia Oberholzer, who won back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014.
The Ladies got a few additional points in the same event when junior
Caitlin Foley took 12th-place in the consolation heat with a time of 55.99.
Wilson nearly collected another title for the Ladies in the very next race, the 100-yard breaststroke. She finished in 1:01.92, which was good for second place. The only swimmer to beat her was Denison University's K.T. Kustritz, who set an NCAA record with a time of 59.77. In the consolation final of the breaststroke event, Kenyon freshman
Makena Markert gave the Ladies a 13th-place time of 1:03.66.
The only other individual event of the evening was the 200-yard butterfly. In that race, senior
Kanchi Desai clocked in at 2:03.51, giving the Ladies tenth-place points.
Friday's session ended on a high note for the Kenyon women, who set a program record in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
Abby Wilson,
Kendall Vanderhoof, Hart and
Hannah Orbach-Mandel teamed up to churn out a runner-up time of 7:15.99. That time blew away the previous Kenyon record of 7:20.23 set last season. It took an NCAA record-setting time of 7:13.51 from Emory's team to keep the Ladies out of the race's top spot.
Heading toward Saturday, the final day of the four-day national championship, Emory sits in first place with 447 points. Kenyon is second with 330 points and Williams College is third with 319 points. Denison (288) and Johns Hopkins University (204) round out the top five.
