At a time when there were no divisions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and all colleges and universities competed at the same level, Joseph Culp became Kenyon's first All-American player in lacrosse. A top-notch defender, Culp was one of just thirty players selected for the award in 1954 including other athletes from such powerhouses as Army, Navy, Syracuse, Maryland, Duke, and Princeton.
