Herrick earned nine letters and was best known for his play on the football field, where he played several different positions. As a punter, he averaged over 40 yards a boot. He also manned the fullback position and was always a serious threat to throw downfield. In 1941 he was named to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference team, named team captain, and selected as the College's Athlete of the Year. He later was awarded a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers football team, but opted to complete college.
