2013 NCAA MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP -- EVENT NOTES

WEDNESDAY
500 Freestyle -- After setting the NCAA record (
4:21.79) in the event last season, Denison junior Allen Weik won the 500 for the second straight season. Kenyon junior Andrew Chevalier, who had the morning prelims fastest time (4:27.37), ended up finishing sixth (4:29.35) in the finals. He was one spot ahead of teammate and sophomore Joseph Guilfoyle, who took seventh place (4:30.36) and posted his second career All-America swim. Last season, Guilfoyle placed 19th in the 500. The two Kenyon swimmers combined for 25 team points, which puts the Lords in second place in the early goings.
200 Individual Medley -- Jeffrey Depew from Redlands successfully defended his title in this event by winning with a time of 1:47.20. Depew's brother, Christopher, a senior, took second place with a time of 1:48.40. For Kenyon, sophomore Austin Caldwell swam his first-ever NCAA championship race and took seventh place (1:50.34).
50 Freestyle -- Kenyon had three swimmers in the finals of this event. Senior Curtis Ramsey placed third (19.95), junior Ian Richardson was fifth (20.15), and senior Ian Stewart-Bates was sixth (20.16). Those three combined for 43 team points, which boosted Kenyon to the top of the team standings with a total of 80 points. Ramsey, who placed ninth in the event last year, now has ten career All-America swims. Richardson improved his career total to seven and Stewart-Bates pumped up his career total to 17 career awards. MIT's Wyatt Ubellacker won the event title with a time of 19.81. He's a senior who placed third in the same event one season ago.
200 Medley Relay -- MIT became the only institution not named Kenyon or Denison to win an NCAA relay title over the past six years. The last team, other than Kenyon or Denison, to win any NCAA relay title was Johns Hopkins, which took the 400 Medley title in 2007. MIT broke the trend Wednesday with a winning time of 1:28.57. Denison (1:28.66) placed second and Kenyon placed fourth (1:29.01) with a team that included Jimmy Chapman, Alex Beckwith, Ryan Funk, and Ian Richardson. The event closed out the first night of competition with Kenyon holding 110 first-place team points and Denison earning 89 second-place team points.
THURSDAY
200 Freestyle Relay -- Kenyon continued its dominance in this event, winning it for the 13th straight season. The last time any other team took the crown was Denison in the 2000 season. Senior Curtis Ramsey was a part of this year's win and was also a part of two previous wins in this event. Junior Ian Richardson, who was a part of last year's win, was also on this year's squad. Those two paired with senior Ian Stewart-Bates and sophomore Austin Caldwell to take the title in a time of 1:18.96. The title was the fourth career title for Ramsey, the fifth for Stewart-Bates, the third for Richardson, and the first for Caldwell. The win also pushed Kenyon's team lead to 28 points over MIT. Denison, which placed ninth in this event, slipped to third place in the team standings with 107 points.
400 Individual Medley -- Hugh Anderson of the University of Mary Washington came into comeptition as the No. 4 seed in this event and pulled off the upset to win the title in record-setting fashion. Anderson, who finished ninth n this event last season, clocked in at 3:50.55 and broke the NCAA mark of 3:51.45 that stood since the 2009 season. The Lords were paced by junior Andrew Chevalier, who clocked in at 3:55.85 and claimed fifth place. Additional points for the Lords came from freshman Mark Newell, who took eighth place and claimed his first career All-America award with a time of 3:59.06. The Kenyon men still sit in first place in the overall team standings, now with a lead that sits at 40 points.
100 Butterfly -- After winning the 50-yard freestyle title yesterday, MIT's Wyatt Ubellacker won his second individual-event title of the 2013 NCAA Championship. He concluded the event with a time of 47.41. Earlier in the day, he set the new NCAA record time at 47.34, wiping out the old mark of 47.43 set by Denison's Aaron Cole at the 2000 meet. While Ubellacker won the title, the Lords continued to increase their lead in the standings. Leading the charge for Kenyon was senior Jimmy Chapman, who placed runner-up with a time 48.23. He was the only Lord in the finals heat, but there were three others in the consolation heat. Kevin Magee placed 11th (49.03), Nick Charriez placed 12th (49.10), and Ryan Funk placed 15th (49.27). Four all four Lords, their placements were personal bests.
200 Freestyle -- The Lords claimed their first individual-event title of the 2013 Championship. Sophomore Austin Caldwell, the No. 2-seeded swimmer in the 200, clocked in 1:37.01 and claimed gold. The national title was the second of the night for Caldwell, who earlier swam a leg on the Lords' winning 200-yard freestyle relay team. Caldwell's winning time in the individual 200 was just .03 off the Marc Courtney-Brooks' record that has stood since 2003. Following up on Caldwell's performance, Kenyon senior Ian-Stewart-Bates claimed third place with a time of 1:38.25. That placement was Stewart-Bates 19th top-ten NCAA finish, as well as his 19th career All-America award. Curtis Ramsey (1:39.68) and Ian Richardson (1:39.75) added 14th- and 15th-place showings for the Lords, respectively.
One-Meter Diving -- Kenyon had no participants in this event. Denison freshman Ben Lewis took the title with 494.65 points.
400 Medley Relay -- Closing out the session in style, the Lords posted a winning time of 3:15.39 for its third event title of the night. The Lords' winning combination was senior Jon Rooker, junior Alex Beckwith, senior James Champman, and senior Ian Stewart-Bates. Their time was just .04 off the Kenyon record and .30 off the NCAA record. Kenyon has won this event five times in the last six years and 12 times in the last 14 years. The title was a first for both Beckwith and Rooker. Stewart-Bates now has six career titles and Chapman has four.
FRIDAY
200 Butterfly -- Miller Douglas of Emory, last year's runner-up, held off Hugh Anderson of Mary Washington for the 2013 crown. Douglas out-touched Anderson 1:46.64 to 1:46.71. Kenyon's only swimmer in this event was senior Nick Charriez, who took seventh place with a time of 1:48.94. The finish gave Charriez his third career All-America award and gave Kenyon a 298-231 lead over second-place Denison.
100 Backstroke --Sophomore Dylan Davis took the title in front of Denison's Sean Chabot. Davis, seeded sixth, clocked in at 48.62. Chabot, seeded fourth, clocked in at 48.63. Denison also had a fifth-place finish in this event and closed the gap on Kenyon from 67 points to 54.5 points. Damage control for Kenyon was taken care of by senior Jimmy Chapman, who took eighth place in 49.42. In the consolation final, Kenyon also got points from Jon Rooker and Kevin Magee. Rooker, a senior, tied for tenth place (49.71), while Magee, a sophomore, took 16th place (50.87).
100 Breastsroke -- One of the weakest events for the Lords. With just one swimmer in the mix, Kenyon received five points and a 12th-place finish from junior Alex Beckwith, who clocked in at 56.38. Denison also had one swimmer in the event, but he placed fifth and pulled the Big Red a little closer to the first-place Lords. At the end of the event, Kenyon owned 321.5 first-place points and Denison had 276 second-place points -- a 45.5-point difference.
800 Freestyle Relay -- Johns Hopkins won this event for the first time in its program's history. The Blue Jays clocked with an NCAA record time of 6:29.27, clipping the old mark of 6;30.40 set by Denison one season ago. The Lords settled for the runer-up spot, just ahead of Denison's third-place team. Kenyon quartet of Ian Stewart-Bates, Austin Caldwell, Curtis Ramsey, and Ian Ricahrdson combined for a time of 6:32.58. Their placement also pushed Kenyon's lead out to 47.5 points (355.5-308).
SATURDAY
1650 Freestyle -- Denison crept a little closer to the first place Lords when Allen Weik won this event for the third straight season. He clocked in at 15:09.63 and cut Kenyon's lead down to 41.5 points. Kenyon tried to offset Weik's finish with a ninth-place showing from Joseph Guilfolye and a 12th-place finish from Andrew Chevalier. Guilfoyle, a sophomore who also placed ninth in this event last season, clocked in at 15:43.48. Chevalier stopped the clock at 15:49.54.
100 Freestyle -- Everyone knew that if Kenyon was going to win the 2013 Championship it would be on the strength of its sprinters. Four of them came through in a huge way in this event. Senior Ian Stewart-Bates won the title (43.77), junior Ian Richardson placed third (44.25), senior Curtis Ramsey was fifth (44.63), and sophomore Austin Caldwell was eighth (45.11). The title for Stewart-Bates was his third of the meet and the seventh of his career. It was also Stewart-Bates' first career individual-event crown. The wave of purple pushed the Lords' overall team lead out to nealry 100 points over second-place Denison University.
200 Backstroke -- Denison charged back in this event, picking up nearly 30 points on the Lords. The Big Red had two top-five finishes. Kenyon senior Jon Rooker did his best to offset those points by placing seventh with a time of 1:49.63. Rooker, who now has eight career All-America swims, placed tenth in this event a season ago. The 2013 champ was Michael Brus of Grinnell who set the new NCAA record at 1:44.81.
200 Breaststroke -- Kenyon junior Alex Beckwith put together the best NCAA individual-event swim of his career. He finished off this event in 2:00.49 to take fourth place and earn his fourth career All-American award. Beckwith came into competition seeded 22nd in this event. Steven Van Deventer of Occidental ended up taking the crown with a time of 1:58.60. With two events left in this championship Kenyon holds an 84.5 lead over second-place Denison.
Three-Meter Diving -- Kenyon had no participants in this event, which was won by William Guedes of Kalamazoo. Denison's Gabe Dixson placed second. That sealed the team championship for Kenyon, which heads into the final event with 459.5 points. Denison, the heavy favorite to win it all, has 396 points.
400 Freestyle Relay -- The Lords took the event title and the overall team title in style, winning the 400-yard freestyle relay for the sixth straight season and for the 18th time in the last 19 seasons. Senior Ian Stewart-Bates went out in 43.66 to pace a winning time of 2:55.07 for the Lords. Joining Ian Stewart-Bates on the team was sophomore Austin Caldwell, senior Curtis Ramsey, and junior Ian Richardson. The title was the eighth in the career of Stewart-Bates and the fifth in the career of Ramsey, who split 43.56.
