MEDFORD, Mass. – The Kenyon College men's soccer team earned its second straight spot in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament after thrashing the Trinity University Tigers, 4-0, Saturday at Bello Field on the campus of Tufts University.
The win puts the Lords back on Bello Field tomorrow for a 1 p.m. game against the host Jumbos. The winner of that game will advance to the NCAA Final Four, which will play out December 2-3 at Kerr Stadium in Salem, Virginia. Tufts earned its quarterfinal spot by defeating UMass-Boston, 1-0, earlier in the day.
The Lords (20-2-0) left little doubt Saturday that they were the better side. Within the game's first five minutes, the Kenyon men unleashed four shots, including one from
Josh Lee that rang off the left post.
It was Kenyon's tenth shot of the game that broke the scoreless tie.
Greg McNeer set up and fired off a shot from the top of the Trinity box. As it approached the goal mouth, Trinity's 6-9 goalkeeper, Todd Whittaker, reached to stop it, but
Billy O'Neill redirected the ball's path and gave Whittaker no chance.
Kenyon outshot Trinity 10-3 in the first half and took that 1-0 lead into the break.
Just 1:49 into the second half, the Lords struck again. A close-range shot from
Jordan Glassman was blocked by a Trinity defender. The rebound bounced to the feet of
Woo Jeon, who blasted home his third goal of the season and doubled the Lords' lead.
Six minutes later, Jeon was the beneficiary of a Trinity miscue. As the ball was heading toward the Tigers' end line, Whittaker rushed to save it from going out of bounds. In one motion, he turned and kicked the ball back into play. He was unable to get much power on his kick and the ball rolled to Jeon, who had a wide open net in which to place the Lords' third, and his second, goal of the game.
With the large lead, Kenyon was able to substitute more freely and wound up getting playing time for 11 reserves. That group played well, too, and even added on to the Kenyon lead.
In the game's 87th minute, McNeer booted home a put-back to finish the game with a goal and an assist. The goal was his first of the season, while the assist, back in the first half of play, was his third of the season.
Trinity (22-2-0) outshot Kenyon 10-8 in the second half, but never really managed to break down the Kenyon defense. When the Tigers were able to get a shot off, senior goalkeeper
Sam Clougher was in the right position to stop it. Clougher ended up making five saves for the Lords. The shutout was his 11th of the season and the 45th of his career.
Guaranteed at least one more game, the Lords' total of 20 wins this season is a Kenyon record, surpassing the 19 wins registered by last year's team, as well as the 1990 team.
Woo Jeon scored twice Saturday and led the Lords to a 4-0 win over Trinity University
in the third round of the NCAA Championship Tournament.
