ANDERSON, Ind. – Kenyon College junior
Maureen Hirt picked up right where she left off in the 2012-13 season opener for the Ladies basketball team Friday night. Hirt, who led Kenyon and the North Coast Athletic Conference with an 18.0 scoring average last season, used a barrage of three-pointers to torch Capital University for 30 points and carry Kenyon to a 78-58 victory in the first round of the Anderson University Tip-Off Classic.
Hirt was dialed in from long distance where she connected on 8-of-11 (72.7 percent) three-pointers. Her efforts helped the Ladies connect on 55.8 percent (29-52) of their field goals and 47.8 percent (11-23) of their shots from beyond the arc in the game.
When Kenyon (1-0) started to pull away from the Crusaders midway through the first half, it was Hirt's sharpshooting that led the charge. The Ladies held a slim, 21-17 cushion before Hirt sparked a 12-6 run with a trio of three-balls that opened up a ten-point lead (33-23). Junior
Maggie Boelter also tripled during the run.
Capital (0-1) kept it a ten-point game into the final four minutes of the half, but Kenyon ended the frame on a 9-0 run for a 46-27 advantage at the break. Seniors
Katie Adlam and
Imani Ladson each hit a bucket with Hirt adding the other five points of the spurt.
The Ladies kept it coming in the second half and led by as many as 31 points before settling on the 20-point margin of victory.
Kayla Ernst also had a strong debut to her senior season with an 18-point, six-rebound performance. Adlam gave Kenyon three players in double-digits with a ten-point night and added four steals to her stat line. Boelter finished with a pair of three-pointers to her credit, but more importantly controlled the flow of the offense by dishing out nine assists.
The Ladies will play Fontbonne University in the championship game of the AU Tip-Off Classic Saturday at 4 p.m. The Griffins topped the host Ravens, 74-61, in Friday night's other first round match-up.
