ADA, Ohio – Ohio Northern University used an early second-half surge to hand the Kenyon College women's basketball team its first loss of the season Tuesday night. The Polar Bears blew open a four-point game with a 15-2 run shortly after halftime and went on to post an 83-55 victory on their home court.
Ohio Northern (2-1) held a 33-28 halftime lead following a first half that included eight lead changes and seven ties. The Polar Bears opened the scoring after the break before junior
Maureen Hirt canned a three-ball to cut the gap down to 35-31.
The Ladies managed only one field goal over the next five minutes, though. ONU took advantage of the lull and built a cushion it would not relinquish.
The Polar Bears seized control of the game by owning the paint. Ohio Northern outscored Kenyon, 44-26, in the lane – including a 28-8 edge in the second half alone. The volume of close-range shots allowed ONU to shoot 54.1 percent (33-61) for the game with the Ladies settling for a 39.3 percent (22-56) performance from the floor.
The Polar Bears also enjoyed a big night on the glass by outrebounding Kenyon, 44-20.

Kayla Ernst topped Kenyon's scoring ledger with 15 points while Hirt finished with 12. Sophomore
Lauren Kriete tallied eight points with three steals as well.
After opening the season with three games on the road, the Ladies (2-1) play back-to-back contests at home beginning with a showdown against Case Western Reserve University Saturday at 2 p.m.
