Division I Redhawks deal Ladies 175-116 defeat

Hannah Saiz
GAMBIER, Ohio – Division I Miami (OH) University visited the Kenyon College Aquatic Center Friday night and brought out some solid performances from the Ladies swimming and diving team. Kenyon won six events, notched five NCAA 'B' cuts, and saw freshman Maria Zarka qualify for the NCAA diving regionals, but the Redhawks prevailed with a 175-116 victory.

Senior Hannah Saiz had a hand in three event wins, two individually and one as a member of the 400-yard medley relay. Saiz claimed the 200 butterfly with a provisional qualifying time of 2:05.34 and the 400 individual medley at 4:36.69. Her leg on the victorious 400 medley relay helped the squad to a 'B'-cut time of 3:53.21.

Freshman Katie Kaestner and junior Hillary Yarosh joined Saiz on that winning swim and went on to double up on relay success. Kaestner and Yarosh closed the night on the 400-yard freestyle relay, which posted a first-place time of 3:32.87. The quartet, which included senior Anna Connolly and freshman Haley Townsend  just missed the provisional qualifying standard of 3:32.70.

In solo swims, Kaestner added a 'B'-cut performance in winning the 100 breaststroke (1:06.80) and Townsend claimed the 100 butterfly at 1:00.15.

Despite not producing a win in the 1,650 freestyle, the Ladies (1-3) assaulted the provisional qualifying mark of 17:39.80 in the event. Freshman Mariah Williamson was runner-up at 17:22.23 and junior Syd Lindblom placed fourth at 17:36.93. Senior Kiersten Bell just missed the cut at 17:39.96.

Under the new entry procedures for the NCAA Division III championships, divers become eligible for the regional meet if they achieve the qualification standard twice during the regular season or once at a conference championship meet. Friday night, Zarka eclipsed the mark on both the one- (288.23 pts.) and three-meter (287.25 pts.) boards. She previously cleared the qualification standards last Saturday at Denison University to punch her ticket to the regional event.
