WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Defense was the name of the game Friday night at Otterbein University in the Kenyon College men's soccer team's season opener. The Cardinals scored the lone goal of the contest and goalie Kyle Ripma made it stand up with 11 saves in a 1-0 shutout victory over the Lords.

Kenyon fired 17 shots at the Cardinal net only to see Ripma throw a brick wall between the pipes. Ripma did most of his damage in the second half when he made seven saves, five of which came after Otterbein took the lead on Justin Esarey's goal in the 61st minute.

With the Lords (0-1) keeping most of the action on the Cardinals' side of the pitch, Otterbein didn't have many offensive opportunities. The Cardinals (1-0) attempted a scant five shots against the stifling Kenyon defense, but made the most of their chances by punching in the game-winning goal.

The Lords will look for better results in their home opener Sunday against the College of Mount St. Joseph. The action is set to begin on Mavec Field at 3 p.m.
