OBERLIN, Ohio – With the score locked up at 52-52 and a little less than five minutes showing on the clock, Wednesday night's women's basketball game hinged on three straight buckets from the Kenyon College Ladies. Senior Kayla Ernst scored the first of those three buckets and sophomore Lauren Kriete connected on the next two to spring the Ladies to a 70-57 victory at Oberlin College.

Ernst got loose on a fast break and junior Maggie Boelter fed her the ball for an easy layup and a two-point Kenyon lead. After that, Kriete went back-to-back on three-point daggers and staked the Ladies to a 60-52 advantage with just 2:41 left.

Oberlin (8-15, 3-11 NCAC) managed to score the next five points, but as time ticked away the Yeowomen were forced to foul. The result of the Oberlin fouls was eight straight free throws drained by Kenyon senior Katie Adlam and junior Maureen Hirt.  Both went 4-for-4 at the line during the game's final 70 seconds.

Up until those final few moments, Oberlin gave Kenyon (16-7, 10-4 NCAC) all it could handle. The Ladies got off to a hot 9-0 start, but by the time the teams reached intermission it was the Yeowomen who owned a 31-30 lead. Ernst had 14 points for the Ladies during those first 20 minutes of play. Oberlin's Christina Marquette took it a step further and tallied 16 points and ten rebounds.

Ernst went on to score another dozen points in the second half, giving her 26 for the game. At the same time, Kenyon's defense collapsed on Marquette, allowing her just six points and three rebounds over the final 20 minutes of the play.

Ernst now has 449 points this season, the fourth -best single-season total in program history. She also now possesses 1,419 career points, a total that is just 24 points shy of third-place among Kenyon's all-time scoring leaders.

Kriete's clutch three-pointers were definitely her highlight, but the 5-11 forward pumped in another three-pointer earlier in the game and wrapped things up with 11 points and three steals. Hirt added 13 points to the Ladies' total, while Adlam contributed six points and ten rebounds. With Hirt and Adlam perfect at the line, Kenyon was 12-of-13 overall (92.3 percent). Entering the game, the Ladies ranked as the fourth-best team in the nation with a 76.6 shooting percentage at the free throw line.

The road ahead for the Ladies starts with a short trip to Ohio Wesleyan University, where they'll take on the Battling Bishops next Wednesday at 6 p.m. After that, they'll finish off the regular season the following Saturday with a home contest against Allegheny College.
