GRANVILLE, Ohio – With a 1-0 victory at Denison University on Saturday the Kenyon College field hockey team avenged a previous loss to the Big Red and moved one step closer to gaining at least a share of the 2014 North Coast Athletic Conference crown.
Entering the game, Kenyon had just one conference loss—a 3-1 home loss to Denison on September 27. That defeat was forgotten as soon as Kenyon junior
Maddie Breschi's shot found the back of the Denison cage with just nine seconds left in the first half. Breschi's goal developed off a penalty corner that was sent in by senior
Rachel Hall, who picked up the assist. The goal was Breschi's team-leading 12th of the season. The assist was Hall's sixth.
Kenyon (15-2, 11-1 NCAC) recorded the shutout without regular starting goalkeeper
Sarah Speroff, who missed the game due to illness. In her absence, sophomore
Claire O'Donnell-McCarthy made three saves and notched her first collegiate victory. She got plenty of help from the Kenyon defense, which yielded just six shots to the Big Red (10-6, 9-4 NCAC).
With two games left in the regular season, the Ladies own a one-game lead over second-place DePauw University, a team they've twice defeated. Denison sits in third place, three games behind Kenyon in the loss column.
The Ladies will finish off their regular season schedule with a Sunday home game against Oberlin College followed by another home game next Saturday against The College of Wooster.
Junior Maddie Breschi scored her 12th goal of the season Saturday and led
the Ladies to a 1-0 win at Denison University.
