GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Ladies remained tied atop the North Coast Athletic Conference women's soccer standings after chalking up a 2-1 home win against the Hiram College Terriers on Saturday afternoon. With two games left in the regular season, the Ladies have a 5-1 NCAC record and are locked into first place with Allegheny College, a team they defeated earlier in the season.
Kenyon's five conference wins are the most since the 2007 season. The Ladies, who are now 8-7-1 overall, have a chance to improve upon that with road games at Ohio Wesleyan University on Tuesday and at Oberlin College next Saturday.
Against the Terriers, the Ladies lit up the scoreboard quickly. In the game's 15th minute, they utilized some excellent passing and scored the game's first goal. Sophomore
Maggie Smith made a precise pass into the box and to the feet of
Becca Romaine. Romaine finished off the play with her team-best 11th goal of the season.
That goal held firm for over 50 minutes. It wasn't until the midway point of the second half that Ladies scored again. This time is was Smith on her own. She weaved through the Hiram box, eluded a defender, juked the goalkeeper, and placed her fifth goal of the season over the Terriers' goal line.
Hiram (5-11-1, 0-6-1 NCAC) got a beautiful header from Alison Cowell off a corner kick to spoil the Kenyon shutout. It was, however, too little, too late for the Terriers who were outshot 25-4.
Sophomore Maggie Smith assisted on the Ladies' first goal and then scored
the game-winner on her own as Kenyon chalked up a 2-1 win against Hiram.
