GAMBIER, Ohio – For the fourth straight game the Kenyon College field hockey team scored four or more goals and rolled to victory. Tuesday evening at McBride Field, the visiting Presidents from Washington & Jefferson College were the victim of Kenyon's high-powered offense and wound up suffering a 5-1 thumping at the hands of the Ladies.
Kenyon (11-2) now has 45 goals this season and is averaging 3.46 goals per game. A pair of Tuesday's goals came from freshman
Weezie Foster. She netted the first one after taking a shot that deflected off a defender's stick and into the Presidents' cage. Washington & Jefferson (7-5) tied the game up at 1-1 about 15 minutes later, but just before the half came to a close Foster scored the goal that held up as the game-winner. Senior
Sammy Johnston took the initial shot, but it was blocked by a defender. The rebound came out to Foster, who fired it home for her third goal of the season.
In the second half, junior
Maddie Breschi, who was just named the NCAC Player of the Week, notched her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Her goal came off a penalty corner that was inbounded by
Rachel Hall. Breschi collected the inbound pass and dished it over to
Julie Freedman. Freedman then passed back to Breschi, who fired away and scored.
In the game's 56th minute, sophomore
Abby Coleman added to the Kenyon total. During a scrum in front of the Presidents' goal line, Coleman managed to backhand a shot through traffic and into the cage. The scoring didn't stop there for the Ladies. About eight minutes later, Freedman looked to send a pass through the right side of the circle. The pass ended up going through a couple of defenders and trickled by the Presidents goalkeeper.
Kenyon outshot Washington & Jefferson 19-7. That left little work for goalkeeper
Sarah Speroff, who made two saves. The only goal Speroff allowed was a put-back from a rebound that she yielded on a previous shot.
The Ladies now look forward to a rematch with DePauw University. That game is slated for a noon start Saturday in Greencastle, Indiana. Earlier this season, when DePauw was ranked as the No. 15 team in the nation, Kenyon upended the Tigers 2-1.
Freshman Weezie Foster scored two goals Tuesday and powered the Kenyon Ladies
to a convincing 5-1 win over Washington & Jefferson College.
