Ladies whip Wooster, claim conference crown

GAMBIER, Ohio – With Shannon Hart's quick redirect off a Maddie Breschi shot, the Kenyon College Ladies field hockey team locked down its first North Coast Athletic Conference regular-season crown since the 2007 season. Hart's goal turned out to be all the Ladies needed in Saturday's 3-0 win over the visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots.

The victory finalized Kenyon's regular-season record at 17-2 and its NCAC record at 13-1. The 17 wins are one shy of the program single-season record and the Ladies' conference mark is the best since the team began competing in the NCAC in the 1984 season.

Saturday's win over Wooster also guaranteed the Ladies the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout next week's NCAC Tournament. The Kenyon women will kick off tournament play Wednesday, November 5 against the No. 4-seeded Wittenberg University Tigers. That game is scheduled for a 2:15 pm start at McBride Field. If the Ladies are able to dispatch Wittenberg, they'll move into the championship game, which is slated for Saturday, November 8. The winner of the championship game receives the NCAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Making all those scenarios possible were three Kenyon goals from three different goal-scorers. Hart led things off just 1:16 into the game. Following a penalty corner, Breschi ripped a shot from the top of the circle. As her shot sailed toward the right side of the Wooster cage, Hart was there to redirect it over the goal line. It was Hart's ninth goal of the season and Breschi's sixth assist.

That goal held up through halftime. About eight minutes into the second half, the Ladies struck again. This time around, the senior duo of Rachel Hall and Cecilia Depman attacked in rapid-fire fashion. Hall scored off an assist from Depman and 21 seconds later Depman scored off an assist from Hall. Hall now has a team best 13 goals this season and improved her Kenyon career mark to 44 goals. For Depman, the goal was her sixth of the season and the 20th of her career.

Claire O'Donnell-McCarthy got the call in goal again for the Ladies. She worked about 61 minutes, made two saves, and helped Kenyon post its third straight and eighth overall shutout win. Julia Richards came off the bench to relieve O'Donnell-McCarthy and to finish off the final few minutes of the contest.
