CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – One of the best seasons in the history of Kenyon College women's soccer came to a close Sunday at The Bank of Kentucky Field on the campus of Thomas More College. The host and No. 9-ranked Saints scored twice in the game's final 21 minutes to claim a 2-1 win over the Ladies in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The loss eliminated Kenyon from tournament play and finalized the Ladies' overall season record at 13-8-1. Thomas More improved to 22-1-0 and now moves into the NCAA quarterfinal round, where it will face the winner of Sunday evening's game between Trinity University and the University of Redlands.
Late in the first half, Kenyon was awarded a penalty and senior
Becca Romaine put the Ladies on the board. Her goal, the 50th of her collegiate career, got Kenyon into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The score remained that way until the 70th minute. That's when Thomas More finally broke through with a cross from Olivia Huber that set up a goal by Julia Flagge-Echols. In the game's 84th minute, the Saints were awarded a penalty kick. Huber stepped up, took the shot, and put her Thomas More team ahead for good.
The Saints outshot the Ladies 22-4 and held a slim 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Kenyon junior goalkeeper
Alissa Poolpol, who made ten saves in Kenyon's 1-0 first-round win over Emory University, made eight more saves Sunday.
