GAMBIER, Ohio – No. 14 Ohio Wesleyan University advanced past No. 6 Kenyon College 2-0 in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament's Sweet 16 Sunday afternoon at Mavec Field.
The Battling Bishops, who fell to the Lords in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament final two weeks ago, scored both of their goals in the first half and thwarted Kenyon's hopes for a comeback in the second half.
For Kenyon, the loss ended their season with the most wins (18) in the
Chris Brown era and the most victories since the 1996 squad totaled the same amount. It was also the second straight year the Lords fell in the round of 16.
The first half was controlled by the Battling Bishops' offense who held a 12-2 shots advantage over the Lords.
OWU got all scoring it needed in the 24th minute on a penalty kick. After NCAC Offensive Player of the Year Colton Bloecher was fouled in the goalie's box, Brian Schaefer snuck a shot past the outstretched arms of Lords goalie
Sam Clougher to the left corner.
The Battling Bishops added their second goal of the half in the 43rd minute as David Robinett passed to a streaking Gunnar Bloecher who finished in the left corner of the net.
Kenyon's offense found some steam in the second half to put pressure on Ohio Wesleyan.
Tony Amolo fired a shot in the 49th minute and
Rei Mitsuyama attempted in the 58th minute but both attempts were saved by OWU's Colin Beemiller.
Woo Jeon got a header off in the 84th minute but came into the arms of Beemiller.
Edgar Arceo tallied Kenyon's final shot on goal but once again, Beemiller stopped the shot. He recorded four saves in the shutout. It was only the fourth time all season Kenyon didn't score a goal.
OWU out-shot Kenyon 21-12 and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Battling Bishops will take on the Christopher Newport University Captains November 24 at Mavec Field with a chance to go to Kansas City and the Final Four. The match is set to start at 1 p.m.
The Lords' outstanding season came to an end November 23 as rival Ohio Wesleyan claimed a 2-0 win in the
Sweet 16. Kenyon's 18 wins were the most in the Chris Brown era and the most victories since the 1996 squad
produced the same amount.
