GAMBIER, Ohio – A first-half goal from sophomore
Shannon Hart held up to be the game-winner Thursday in the Kenyon College Ladies' 1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference field hockey victory over the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops.
The win was Kenyon's tenth straight. It boosted the Ladies' overall record to 12-1 and their NCAC record to 9-0. The victory was also Kenyon's 19th straight regular-season NCAC win. The Ladies' last NCAC loss was to Denison University on September 27, 2014.
At the other end of the field, Ohio Wesleyan, coached by former Kenyon assistant coach Brenda Semit, fell to 6-8 overall and 4-5 in conference competition.
The Ladies outshot the Battling Bishops 17-0 throughout the first 35-minute half, but Hart was the only one who sniffed the OWU cage. At the 12:48 mark, she stole the ball as Ohio Wesleyan was in transition. She took it the opposite direction and fired a shot that hit the left post and ricocheted away.
About ten minutes after that close-call, freshman
Minke Verweij launched a left-to-right pass through the Battling Bishops' circle. Hart was standing near the Ohio Wesleyan right post and put the ball home for the first and only goal of the game. It was Hart's ninth tally of the season and her sixth goal in the Ladies' last six games.
Nothing much changed in the second half. Kenyon dominated play, uncorked another 12 shots, but had difficulty getting anything to cross the Battling Bishops' goal line.
At the 16:21 mark of the second half, Kenyon was awarded a penalty stroke and given a prime opportunity to put the game away. Senior
Morgen Barroso took the shot, but it streaked wide left.
Kenyon ended up out-shooting Ohio Wesleyan 29-0 and sophomore goalkeeper
Sarah Speroff barely had to touch the ball to notch her ninth shutout of the season for the Ladies.
While Speroff gets credit for the shutout, she and the defensive unit in front of her have not allowed a goal in Kenyon's last 222 minutes of play.
The Ladies will look to keep that streak alive Saturday when they host the Wittenberg University Tigers at 11 a.m.
Sophomore Shannon Hart rang up the only goal Thursday in Kenyon's conference win over Ohio Wesleyan University.
The goal was her ninth of the season and her sixth in the Ladies' last six games.
