MEADVILLE, Pa. – One year ago, the Kenyon College women's soccer team shared the regular-season North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) championship with Allegheny College and then defeated the Gators, 3-1, in the championship game of the NCAC Tournament. That loss weighed heavily on the minds of the Gators, who gained some revenge Saturday with a 1-0 upset of the Ladies at the Robertson Complex.
Allegheny (4-9-2, 2-2-2 NCAC) produced the game's only goal in the 21st minute. A crossing pass from the right side, delivered by Hannah Zangara, took one bounce and found the feet of Olivia Cushman, who then fired it past Kenyon keeper
Alissa Poolpol and inside the Ladies' left post.
Poolpol would go on to make two saves in the game, while her counterpart, Christina Gallagher, made five saves for Allegheny.
The Kenyon offense kept pressure on the Gators, but couldn't find the net. The Ladies ended up out-shooting the Gators, 15-7, with just five of those shots on goal. Junior
Maggie Smith took five shots to lead the team, while
Emma Klug and
Gillian Blackwell each had three shots.
The loss muddied the playoff picture for the Ladies (10-6-1, 4-2-1 NCAC), who slipped from second place to third place in the NCAC standings. They'll have one final chance to improve upon that position when they host Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday in the regular-season finale.
The Kenyon College Ladies were upended at Allegheny College, 1-0, Saturday.
