Jeremiah Barnes delivered the game-winning penalty kick against Wabash Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Kenyon's 15th of the season, the team secured the NCAC regular season title.GAMBIER -- It took until the second overtime, but the Kenyon College men's soccer team finally turned a dominating performance into a 2-1 victory at Mavec Field
on Saturday over Wabash College.
In the process, the eighth-ranked Lords secured their first North Coast Athletic Conference regular-season championship since 2007. The regular-season championship was also Kenyon's seventh since the NCAC began play in the 1984 season.
Kenyon finishes the regular season with a record of 15-1, 8-1 in the NCAC, and will be the top seed in the upcoming four-team NCAC Tournament.
The Lords' winning goal came on a penalty kick in the 103rd minute. Wabash's Scott Frye was called for a hand ball in the box, leading to a yellow card.
Jeremiah Barnes took the penalty kick and fired it in for his first goal of the season.
The shot was Kenyon's 21st and final shot of the match, 11 of which were on goal. Wabash, meanwhile, had just nine shots, three of which were on goal.
The first two goals of the match came within one minute of each other. Both teams played tentatively and defensively for the first 30 minutes. Then, Wabash stepped up the energy and scored first. Nikola Kajmakoski took a loose ball in the box that had been misplayed the Lords. He shot into the lower right corner of the goal, past keeper
Sam Clougher for a 1-0 lead.
Immediately, the Lords stepped up their aggression as well. A crossing pass was deflected by a Wabash defender in the box.
Woo Jeon scooped the loose ball and fired it past Wabash goalie Dayton Jennings to even the match. The goal was Jeon's seventh of the season, putting him second behind
Tony Amolo for the team lead.
Kenyon continued its aggressiveness throughout the rest of the match, but could not put the ball in the goal. The Lords attempted 11 shots in the second half -- four on goal -- but none went in. Twice, a foul near the box led to a free kick for Kenyon, but both deflected off the Wabash wall of defenders.
Clougher had two saves on the day. Barnes attempted four shots on goal, the last of which scored the game-winner.
Oliver Wynn had two shots on goal while Amolo,
Jordan Glassman and
Henry Myers each had one attempt on goal.
It was the Lords' seventh straight victory, during which they outscored their opponents, 20-4. Kenyon will host an NCAC Tournament semifinal match against Oberlin on
Wednesday, Nov. 4. The Lords are the defending tournament champions, having defeated Ohio Wesleyan, 2-1, in last year's championship game.
