Ladies remain perfect after corralling Bison

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Ladies basketball team used a strong third-quarter performance to overcome the visiting Bethany College Bison in Tuesday night's non-conference contest at Tomsich Arena. The Ladies outscored the Bison 23-10 in that third frame and held on for a 70-64 victory.

The win has Kenyon off to a 4-0 start for the first time since the 2009-10 season. On the other side of the court, Bethany dipped to 2-2 with the loss.

Trailing 38-33 at the half, the Ladies made the right adjustments and blitzed the Bison in the third quarter. The teams first traded buckets to open the quarter and then Kenyon went on a 10-0 tear fueled by three-pointers from junior Bailey Dominguez and freshman Hannah O'Day. While the Kenyon offense was heating up, its defense forced the Bison into seven turnovers in the first five minutes of the quarter.

As the quarter came to a close junior Sidney Cera canned three straight free throws, converted a layup and then added two more free throws to push Kenyon into the final frame with a 56-48 advantage.

Dominguez made three more three-pointers early in the final frame and finished with a team-high 17 points. After shooting just 1-of-8 in the first half, she went 5-of-7 in the second half. Her trio of long-range shots was followed by a layup from classmate Charlotte Bussema that gave Kenyon its largest lead of the game at 67-56 with 6:28 left on the clock.

Bethany got as close as five points with 2:35 left, but the remainder of the game saw the Bison miss four shots and turn the ball over twice. It was quite a decline for Bethany, which controlled the first half of play. The Bison shot 8-of-15 from three-point territory in the first half and 14-of-28 overall to move ahead by as many as ten points before settling on a five-point margin at the break.

Bethany's Mikyla Tipton was 4-of-5 on three-point attempts before halftime, but missed her only two attempts in the second half. She ended up leading her squad in scoring with a game-high 19 points. The Bison, as a team, finished the second half just 1-of-8 from long range.

In addition to her 17 points, Dominguez also had four assists, four steals and four rebounds for the Ladies. Cera ended up 7-of-9 at the free throw line and finished with 11 points. Ifeoma Archimalo and Miranda Diesz each contributed eight points in the win.

Kenyon will break for the holiday and return to action in Transylvania University's Pat Deacon Classic, a two-day, four-team tournament that gets underway Saturday. The Ladies will start out facing the host and No. 25-ranked Pioneers, at 7 p.m. The tournament's consolation and championship games are slated for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, Sunday.
