Denison defense stymies Ladies in NCAC semifinal

GRANVILLE, Ohio - The Kenyon College Ladies' bid to successfully defend their 2014 North Coast Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament title came to an end Wednesday night. The Ladies struggled to come up with quality shots and fell, 1-0, in the semifinal round to host Denison University.

Less than three weeks ago, Kenyon chalked up a 1-0 double-overtime home win against the Big Red. Wednesday, however, Denison turned the tables. The Big Red defense allowed just six Kenyon shots and only two of those were on goal.

Denison entered the four-team NCAC tournament as the No. 2 seed and will advance with a 15-3 record to play at DePauw University in Saturday's NCAC tournament finale. DePauw, the tournament's No. 1 seed, advanced to the final game after upending Wittenberg University, 2-1, in double-overtime.

Kenyon, a team that entered this year's conference tournament as the No. 3 seed, wrapped up its 2015 season with a final record of 11-7-1.

The game's only goal came off a free kick in the 38th minute. After a Kenyon foul, Denison's Drew Wentzel lined up the near the left sideline, roughly 30 yards away from the goal mouth. She sent in a perfect pass near Kenyon's right post, where it was headed into the net by sophomore Meg Wozniak.

That was the only ball Kenyon senior goalkeeper Alissa Poolpol let slip by. Otherwise, Poolpol turned in a great game that included six saves to keep her Kenyon team in the hunt.

Poolpol finished off her final campaign at Kenyon with 78 saves, a stellar 0.56 goals against average and a .876 save percentage. Her goals against average and her 10 shutouts were both Kenyon single-season program records.

Offensively, Kenyon had a few chances, but just couldn't convert. A Campbell Fee shot in the 16th minute was turned aside by Denison keeper Jenny Herold. Just before the half, Virginia Fergusson let a free kick fly, but it sailed just a bit high and to the right of her intended target.

In the second half, Meredith Rogers put a header on net, but it too was hauled in by Herold. Kenyon uncorked two more off-target shots in the next ten minutes of play and then, after Denison packed the zone, went the final 30 minutes without recording a shot.
