GAMBIER, Ohio – The Augustana College women's lacrosse team had six players score three goals apiece Saturday as the visiting Vikings handed the host Kenyon College Ladies an 18-7 non-conference loss. It was the third straight defeat for the Ladies, who now possess a 5-3 overall record.
The Vikings, who are now 6-1, controlled possession for most of the first ten minutes of the game and built a 3-0 lead during that time. Kenyon scored its first goal at the 18:50 mark on an unassisted shot from freshman
Kat Englert. Augustana responded, but sophomore
Gia Biaggi scored about six minutes later to cut the Kenyon deficit to 4-2.
Over the final 12 minutes of the first half, the Vikings took complete control of the game. They blitzed Kenyon with an 8-2 run and got to the half with a commanding 12-4 lead. Hilary Kargl scored all three of her goals for Augustana during that run and Kendall Maduro scored twice.
Englert scored one more time before the break and then added two more tallies in the second half to lead all players with four goals on the day. She also leads the Ladies with 31 goals this season and ranks second on the team with 38 points.
In an effort to change momentum, the Ladies switched up goalkeepers at the half, replacing senior starter
Meredith Bentsen with freshman
Allie Dumas. Dumas was unable to stop the Augustana offense, but was able to slow it down. She allowed six goals and made four saves while getting a look at 15 Augustana shots. Bentsen saw 20 first-half shots, made three saves, and allowed a dozen goals.
Overall, Augustana out-shot Kenyon 35-22. Throughout the game, the Ladies' downfall was maintaining possession. They had eight failed clears and turned the ball over 18 times.
On the offensive end, Englert's and Biaggi's goals were complemented by two more scores from sophomore
Allie McLane. She scored once in each half and brought her season total up to 20 goals.
Jane Symmes and
Caroline Shipman each had an assist to round out the list of Kenyon point-getters.
The Ladies will try to regroup and look forward to the remainder of their scheduled games, which are all North Coast Athletic Conference contests. That stretch gets underway next Saturday with a 1 p.m. home contest against Allegheny College.
Kat Englert scored four times Saturday during the Ladies' 18-7 loss to Augustana College.
She now has a team-best 31 goals on the season.
