GAMBIER, Ohio -- It took a goal in the second overtime period to knock off the Kenyon College Ladies on Saturday afternoon in their non-conference women's soccer match against Hanover College at Mavec Field.
Kenyon (0-2-0) controlled the ball early and it translated to the first goal of the match. Following a foul, senior defender
Marie Laube launched the free kick to junior forward
Maggie Smith, who put the ball in the goal at the 10:16 mark. It was Ladies' first goal of the season and was Smith's 17th career goal.
Hanover (2-0-0) turned up the offense after that. After the Panthers missed several shots wide, Anne-Spicer Adams scored unassisted at 29:34 to tie the match.
Kenyon's
Emma Klug had a shot on goal in the 31st minute, but it was saved by Hanover goalkeeper Morgan Cole. Two minutes into the second half, Smith had her second shot on goal, but it was saved as well. They were the only two saves of the game for Cole.
There was no more scoring through regulation. Hanover had three more shots in overtime before Elaine Simpson broke away with a pass up the middle from Anna Cornacchione at the 105:15 mark and scored the game-winner.
It almost didn't get to overtime. In the 67th minute, Kenyon was called for a foul in the box and Hanover's Rachel Alvis took a penalty kick. However, Kenyon goalkeeper
Alissa Poolpol dove to her right and knocked the ball away for one of her five saves on the day.
Hanover outshot Kenyon, 19-10, and finished with seven shots on goal, while Kenyon had three on goal. Hanover also held a significant advantage in corner kicks, 6-1.
The Ladies will try again for their first win of the season when they return to Mavec Field on Sunday to battle with the University of Mount Union at 1 p.m.
