Ladies unable to crack Denison defense

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College Ladies soccer team struggled with rival Denison University's strong defense on Saturday afternoon. The Ladies weren't able to get a shot on goal, then gave up a late goal to fall, 1-0, in their North Coast Athletic Conference game.

The defeat gives Kenyon its first NCAC loss of the season (3-1-1), while first-place Denison remained unbeaten (4-0-1).

The lone goal came in the 78th minute. Jacquie Graham scored when she took a cross from teammate Grace Murray and headed it in.

Kenyon (5-6-2 overall) did attempt four shots, but all were off target. The Ladies' best chance came in the 44th minute, right after freshman Fallon Raviol came into the game. She took a pass and shot just wide of the right post. Later, in the 73rd minute, Raviol set up junior teammate Campbell Fee for a shot that went just over the crossbar.

Kenyon kept it scoreless early in the second half when the Big Red had an excellent scoring chance in the 63rd minute. Two consecutive shots were deflected by Kenyon defenders, leading to two corner kicks.

Junior Heather Pacheco and junior Emma Klug also took shots for Kenyon.

Denison attempted 19 shots in all, of which eight were on target. That resulted in seven saves for Kenyon goalkeeper Jillian Countey.

Denison had four corner kicks. Kenyon had none.

The loss ended a four-game unbeaten streak for the Ladies, who will now look to climb back into the race for the NCAC crown Tuesday at home at Mavec Field against Oberlin College. First kick is set for 4 p.m.
