Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Battling Bishops blank Ladies

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's soccer team could not get a shot past Battling Bishops goalkeeper Mackenzie Brunke on Wednesday night at Ohio Wesleyan University. Brunke made seven saves and secured a 1-0 win over the Ladies, who were playing their final North Coast Athletic Conference contest of the season.

The loss dropped Kenyon to 6-8-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the NCAC. It also eliminated any chance the Ladies had of hosting a postseason tournament game. With four teams making the conference tournament and the top two teams hosting semifinal games, the Ladies can finish no better than third place. In order to maintain their place in the postseason, the Ladies will need a Saturday loss or tie from DePauw University or a loss from The College of Wooster. DePauw hosts Allegheny College and Wooster hosts first-place Wittenberg University.

The Kenyon women did everything they could to get the win Wednesday, including out-shooting Ohio Wesleyan 17-10 and earning a slight 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Three of those corners came in the game's final 25 minutes. Campbell Fee had a header off one of the corners and Gwyneth Phillips uncorked shots on the other two. Fee's header was saved by Brunke, while Phillips had one shot blocked and the other sail wide.

Gillian Blackwell led the Ladies with four shots in the game. Maggie Smith, Fee and Philips each had three shots.

Ohio Wesleyan, which improved to 6-10-0 overall and 3-4-0 in the conference, got the only goal it needed in the game's sixth minute. A crossing pass booted by Hannah Joseph found Brooke Zinader, who tapped it over to Kellie Garvin. Garvin then took one step and buried the shot for her first goal of the season.

Kenyon will now finish off the 2016 regular season with a non-conference home game against Wheaton College. That game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start Saturday at Mavec Field.
