Ladies tie Wooster, remain unbeaten in NCAC

GAMBIER, Ohio – The visiting Fighting Scots from The College of Wooster scored a goal with just 4:24 left in regulation Saturday to salvage a tie with Kenyon College women's soccer team, which ended up playing nearly 80 percent of the game down one player.

The tie kept Kenyon from evening up its overall record (4-5-2), but did keep the Ladies undefeated in North Coast Athletic Conference action (2-0-1). Wooster moved to 4-6-3 overall and 1-0-2 in NCAC play.

Kenyon's lone goal came from senior Maggie Smith. At the 22:05 mark of the first half, Smith chipped in her shot off a free kick from junior Heather Pacheco. Pacheco's kick came from near midfield and Smith was about eight yards out when she scored. It was her team-leading ninth goal of the season.

One minute after the goal, Kenyon's Maia Emden was hit with a red card, leaving the Ladies one player down for the remainder of the game. The situation didn't bring the Ladies down. They continued to both attack the Wooster net and protect their one-goal lead.

It wasn't until the game's final minutes that the Fighting Scots were able to apply pressure on the Kenyon defense. The Wooster team, which totaled 13 shots during regulation, fired six of those shots in the final nine minutes. The Scots' surge paid off in the form of the equalizer at the 85:36 mark. An Anna Hartig crossing pass from the right side found Caroline Dres in the center of the box. Dres then drilled her shot into the center of the Kenyon net, giving Ladies goalkeeper Jillian Countey no chance.

Wooster carried some of that momentum into overtime. The Scots had two shots, one on goal, in the first ten-minute overtime session. Early in the second overtime, Wooster had another opportunity, but a two-on-one saw Erica White's shot go just wide.

Kenyon managed a couple of crossing passes into the Wooster box, but the Ladies couldn't do much with them. A header from Smith, that went well wide of the net, was Kenyon's best attempt at ringing up the game-winner in overtime.

When the final horn sounded, Wooster had a 17-11 advantage in shots taken. Both teams were awarded four corner kicks. Carly Eppler made four saves for Wooster, while Countey was a bit busier, making seven saves for the Ladies.
