Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lowry lifts Lords to fourth straight Sweet 16

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Bret Lowry headed home a pass along the left post and vaulted the Kenyon College Lords soccer team into the NCAA Sweet 16 for the fourth consecutive season. Lowry's goal, which occurred in the first overtime of Sunday's second-round game gave the Lords a 2-1 victory over the host Lynchburg College Hornets.

Nearly eight minutes into the extra session, Woo Jeon possessed along the left side and crossed to teammate Henry Myers. The junior defender then headed the ball back near Lowry who finished it off to send the Lords into the Sweet 16.

The second-round match was highly physical. There were 35 combined fouls called and five yellow cards drawn.  Despite the physicality, the Lords got off on the right foot early. Kenyon possessed in the Hornets' side of the field and got a couple looks from Dalton Eudy and Myers.

The scoreless tie was broken at 14:34. Jeon was along the right side, passed between a couple defenders and watched as Myers picked up the ball and fired into center net.

About six minutes later, Lynchburg found the equalizer. A pass from the left side hung high and it appeared Kenyon keeper Sam Clougher would come up with it. But it dropped to the ground and Fredy Flores found Ben Grossfuss for the goal.

That 1-1 tally remained until the second stanza when the Hornets almost scored on a couple of occasions.

In the 78th minute, Grossfuss's header in front of the net on a set piece came into the arms of Clougher. With less than five minutes left, Zach Thomas got another on-target look but Clougher was there again.

Lynchburg's final attempt was once again in front of the net, but David Resnekov blocked the attempt from Austin Klues.

In overtime, the Lords dominated possession until Lowry struck the game-winner.
