SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Wittenberg University held the Kenyon Ladies soccer team to just five shots and advanced into the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament final with a 3-0 victory Wednesday night at Edwards-Maurer Field. The loss ended Kenyon's season at 6-10-2 and was the final game for senior
Maggie Smith who finished her career as the school's fifth all-time leading scorer (36).
The first half wasn't friendly for the Ladies as the Tigers seized a 2-0 lead and didn't surrender a single shot to Kenyon.
A scoreless tie was broken at 20:04 when Leah Soutar, the conference leader in assists, found teammate Kenzie Mason for the Tigers' first goal of the game. It was Soutar's eighth assist of the season.
That 1-0 lead was then doubled not even two minutes later when Michelle Brunswick scored on another assist from Soutar. By the end of the first stanza, Witt had an 8-0 advantage in shots.
Second-half action saw Kenyon get a little more fluidity on the offensive end. A
Gillian Blackwell corner eight minutes into the period got to defender
Maia Emden but her shot, Kenyon's first of the match, was saved by Tigers keeper Hannah Wilson.
Emden's attempt was the only on-goal look the Ladies got before Wittenberg scored again. Brunswick tallied her second goal of the contest in the 73rd minute as she headed home an Emily Thomas pass.
Kenyon kept fighting though and got a few more on-target looks from
Fallon Raviol,
Brianna Maggard,
Virginia Fergusson and
Annie Hesse, but none of them found the back of the net.
In goal, freshman
Jillian Countey came up with a pair of saves.
The Ladies' 2016 campaign came to an end on Wednesday as top-seeded Wittenberg University defeated fourth-seeded
Kenyon by a 3-0 count in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
