OBERLIN -- A back-and-forth game between the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team and host Oberlin College came down to a scoring run late in the game. Over the course of the final five minutes of play, the Yeowomen scored three times to steal a 15-12 win from the Ladies.
The loss ended a brief two-game winning streak for Kenyon, which fell to 2-3 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play and 8-3 overall. On the other side of the field, Oberlin snapped a two-game skid and bumped its records to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in the NCAC.
The game started with the two teams trading off the lead. When things were knotted up at 3-3, Oberlin scored five straight goals to seemingly seize control. The Ladies, however, responded with three quick goals.
Jane Symmes, who had already assisted on two goals, scored two of those three Kenyon goals in extra-player situations.
Abby Coleman scored the other Kenyon goal, her sixth goal of the season, during that quick run that brought the Ladies to within two goals at 8-6.
In the second half, the Ladies fell behind by three again, but rattled off another three-goal spurt to even things up at 9-9 with exactly 20 minutes left in the game. Two of those three goals came from
Cassie Hudson-Heck and the other was scored by
Kat Englert.
From there, the teams traded goals for the next 15 minutes. Englert, Hudson-Heck and Symmes each added one more goal to their totals. Hudson-Heck finished with a team-high four goals, giving her 30 for the season. Englert, with three on Saturday, leads the Ladies with 44 goals this season, while Symmes moved her season total to 32.
Kelley Russell also added a goal for her sixth of the year.
At the 5:05 mark, Oberlin tallied the go-ahead score from Marissa Maxfield. Maggie Mullard scored again with 3:12 left and Natalie Rauchle added a meaningless goal with 15 ticks remaining on the clock. Rauchle finished with a game-high five goals and Mullard wrapped things up with four.
Oberlin outshot Kenyon, 31-24. However, 21 of Kenyon's 24 shots were on goal. Kenyon goalkeeper
Allie Dumas finished with seven saves and Kenyon beat Oberlin in draws, 19-9.
The Ladies will next host Denison University at Mavec Field on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
