GAMBIER, Ohio—Despite being out-shot 20-4, the Kenyon Ladies soccer team managed to secure a 1-1 double-overtime draw with the visiting Salisbury University Seagulls on Saturday afternoon at Mavec Field. It was the first-ever matchup between the two institutions.
First-half action was rather slow for the first 40 minutes of competition. The Seagulls took just a pair of shots while the Ladies didn't find an opportunity until the 39th minute.
A corner kick from junior
Gillian Blackwell came into the box and first-year Gwenyth Phillips headed it home for her first career goal.
The 1-0 lead didn't hold long though as Salisbury got the equalizer just three minutes later. Julianna Boller was able to beat keeper
Jillian Countey in the 41st to notch the match at 1.
In the second half, Salisbury had four on-goal attempts but Countey was there for a few more saves.
On the other end, Kenyon had two shot attempts in the second from
Maggie Smith and
Camila Kirtzman.
After 90 minutes of action, the game went into overtime still tied at 1 apiece. Neither team got a shot off in the extra session pushing the match to its second overtime. In the final 10 minutes, Salisbury nearly stole a win in the final 10 seconds. A breakaway along the right side from Ruthie Lucas resulted in an attempt but it sailed wide left as time expired.
Countey, playing her first full game in a Kenyon uniform, collected seven saves in the contest.
Kenyon is back on Mavec Field tomorrow at noon as they host Carleton College.
