Smith picks apart Engineers in 4-0 rout

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Kenyon College senior Maggie Smith nearly dismantled the Engineers all by herself Saturday. The women's soccer team's prolific forward helped deliver a 4-0 win as she notched three goals against host Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Smith, who scored Kenyon's lone goal in the Ladies' season-opening loss Thursday, now has four goals this season and 29 for her career. That total ranks sixth-best all time at Kenyon and is six goals shy of tying Shannon Maroney '01 for fifth place all-time with 35 career goals.

Before Smith started to set off her fireworks, it was junior Gillian Blackwell that put the Ladies on the board first. She scored an unassisted goal just 56 seconds into the game. It was her first goal of the season and the eighth of her Kenyon career.

Smith then started her natural hat trick with her first tally at the 13:18 mark of the first half. Freshman Meredith Glover was credited with the assist on the play. That put Kenyon ahead 2-0 at the half.

Late in the second half, Smith finished off her assault with her second goal at 71:28 and her third at 77:26. Her second goal was unassisted and her third was set up by junior Virginia Fergusson.

In front of the net, Kenyon's goaltending duo combined for the shutout win. Jillian Countey played the first half and made one save. Maria Paparella then stepped in for the second half and made three saves.

Overall, the Ladies (1-1) outshot the Engineers, 14-7.
