Ladies lock down Yeowomen

GAMBIER, Ohio –The Kenyon Ladies' defense was on point throughout the night as they downed Oberlin College 42-31 on Wednesday in a North Coast Athletic Conference basketball game at Tomsich Arena.

The 31 points given up were the fewest allowed this season by the Ladies (11-5, 5-2 NCAC) and it's the lowest total allowed in a conference regular-season victory since Kenyon defeated The College of Wooster 59-30 on January 18, 2006.

Additionally, the Ladies held the visitors scoreless from three-point range. Oberlin came into the affair leading the NCAC in three-point field goal percentage at 32.6 percent.

Jessica Gerber led Kenyon with 10 points off the bench as she hit 4-of-8 from the field. Senior Bailey Dominguez added nine points on a trio of long range shots while Charlotte Bussema tallied eight points, four rebounds and three blocks.

Kenyon started the game well forcing a couple of turnovers while getting a 7-0 lead on buckets from Bussema and Dominguez. The Yeowomen recovered from the slow start though as 6-foot-4 sophomore Olivia Canning hit all three of her shots and got the visitors to within one (14-13) by the end of the quarter.

In the second, the lead changed hands six times. Oberlin had a trio of one-point advantages with its last coming at the 3:02 mark when Jasmine Sorrells hit a layup bringing the count to 19-18. But two possessions later, Miranda Diesz buried a three-ball giving Kenyon a 21-19 lead. That score remained for the final two minutes of the half.

The Ladies then broke open the game about midway through the third. After Sorrells's layup at 6:35 brought the score to 26-22, Kenyon closed the door on the Yeowomen. Dominguez hit another three-pointer and started a 14-2 run which put the home team up 40-24 at the end of the period. Three other players scored for Kenyon including four points from Ifeoma Archimalo and five from Gerber.

Oberlin was never able to get the contest within single digits after that while the Ladies went up as many as 15 (42-27) after a Bussema layup with 6:35 left.

In the second half, Kenyon held Oberlin to just 5-of-23 shooting (21.7%).

Next up for Kenyon is another conference matchup, this time against Hiram College on January 14 at 1 p.m. The Terriers will bring a 13-3 record into the game.
