Second-half surge lifts Ladies to victory

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Kenyon Ladies soccer team won for the third straight time on Wednesday night earning a 3-0 win at Ohio Wesleyan University in a North Coast Athletic Conference match. With the victory, the Ladies improved to 6-6-2 and remained in first in the NCAC with a 4-0-1 mark.

Just a little over a minute into the match, Samantha Hayes nearly put the Ladies on the board with a strong shot from the right side of the box.

After a couple more on-goal attempts from Brianna Maggard and Gillian Blackwell, senior Campbell Fee fired at the 11th minute from at least 35 yards away and watched as the ball hit the top of the crossbar. That was the last real scoring threat from Kenyon in the first.

On the other side, Ohio Wesleyan found a few good shots including two from Emma Felty. At 7:23, she fired nearing the right end line. With about 11 minutes left in the half, she found another attempt but Ladies' keeper Jillian Countey stopped it.

For a fair portion of the half, Countey was on point as OWU controlled a bit of possession and found some good opportunities. By halftime, Countey had collected four saves.

The second half turned out to be a different story. Kenyon outshot Ohio Wesleyan 10-5 and found three goals from three different players to pull away.

At 54:44, the Ladies ended the scoreless tie as Fee headed Caroline McNeer's corner kick home for her fourth goal of the season.

Just four minutes later, Blackwell fired from along the left side into the right corner of the net. The scoring was capped off for Kenyon in the 69th minute. A free kick from the far side by Fee was headed by Fallon Raviol to Maia Emden who did the rest from the left post.

On the other end, the Battling Bishops didn't manufacture much. There was just one shot on goal in the 49th minute on a header from Caitlyn Smith. For Countey, it was her eighth shutout of the season which tied her for the third-most in a single season with three matches left.

Kenyon will look to inch closer to an NCAC Tournament berth this coming Saturday when the host DePauw University at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
