Kenyon tops OWU, runs streak to four

DELAWARE, Ohio - The Kenyon College field hockey team extended its win streak to four on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University. The Ladies are now a perfect 6-0 on the road and continue to hold first place in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

Both goalkeepers put on excellent performances at Selby Stadium. For Kenyon, senior Sarah Speroff made eight saves and disrupted several breakaway plays that could have sunk the Ladies. OWU's Alycia Goins was under much more pressure and was forced to make 17 saves, keeping the Battling Bishops afloat. Throughout the game, the Kenyon offense peppered the OWU cage with 36 shots in total, more than half of them on-frame.

Senior Shannon Hart drew first blood for Kenyon (13-2, 10-1 NCAC). In the 18th minute, Hart snagged a loose ball at the top of the OWU circle and quickly levelled a beeline shot into the back of the net. The goal was her fourth of the season and her second in Kenyon's last four games.

Not more than 90 seconds later, the Battling Bishops (5-12, NCAC 1-11) tied the score at 1-1. After Speroff blocked a shot off a corner, OWU's Erin Greer collected the rebound and squeezed a short cross to the back post, where Alexis Roberts tapped the ball over the goal line.

After halftime, offensive pressure stalled on both sides. Despite shots flying in both directions, stalwart goalkeeping kept the score tied. But with a little more than ten minutes remaining in the game, freshman forward Olivia O'Connell broke through the scoring drought and notched the deciding goal for the Ladies. O'Connell corralled a rebound and, with her back to the goal, spun and hooked a shot neatly into the net for the late-game lead. Like Hart, that was O'Connell's fourth goal of the season.

With under a minute to play, the Battling Bishops got one more chance to tie the game off a penalty corner by Greer, but Kenyon's defense stood strong and broke up the play before OWU could even attempt a shot.

The Ladies will return home tomorrow for a match against Wittenberg University (11-4, NCAC 8-3) at 1 p.m.
