GAMBIER, Ohio – Trailing by two goals with less than ten minutes left in Tuesday's North Coast Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament semifinal, the Kenyon College Ladies completed an improbable comeback and then used a penalty-kick shootout to squeak by The College of Wooster Fighting Scots.
The final result will go down in the books as a 3-3 tie, but Kenyon, the tournament's No. 1 seed, advances to the championship game, which will be held Saturday at Mavec Field. The Ladies will entertain the winner of Wednesday's other semifinal game between Wittenberg and Denison universities.
Kenyon (9-6-3) uncharacteristically coughed up three goals against the Fighting Scots. That total was equal to the amount of goals the Ladies allowed in their previous 12 games combined.
Wooster (7-7-4) got on the board first with the game's lone first-half tally. That came off a shot from Mila Zunich, who collected the rebound off an initial shot saved by Kenyon goalkeeper
Jillian Countey.
It wasn't until the game's 54th minute that Kenyon cleared its zero off the scoreboard. A cross from
Samantha Hayes near the left end line went off the fingertips of Wooster goalkeeper Maddy Ireton and found its way to senior
Emma Klug, who punted it home.
Wooster retaliated with two more goals, seemingly putting the game away. At the 65:52 mark, Erica White had her shot blocked by a Kenyon defender. The ricochet came right back to her and her second shot did not miss the mark. Then, at 80:13, Krissy Blanchard broke free down the middle of the field. She delivered a pass ahead to Miura Wiley, who got in the Kenyon box and scored with a shot from the right side. With 9:47 left, the Ladies were staring at a disappointing end to their season.
Klug, however, came through again. Taking another pass from Hayes, Klug chipped a shot from the top of the box that sailed over Ireton's head and settled in the net. It was Klug's second goal of the game and her third of the season.
That goal brought new life to the Ladies, who struck again with just 5:02 left on the clock. This time it was the combination of Hayes and
Morgan Engmann and who dialed up the equalizer and eventually pushed the game into overtime. Hayes had a breakaway down the right side. When she neared the goal, Ireton stepped up to cut her off. Hayes then squeaked a pass by her, just enough to get the ball to Engmann, who was standing on the left side and finished things off.
Neither team produced a serious scoring threat in overtime, so things came down to a shootout.
Kenyon converted its first two attempts, one from
Campbell Fee and the other from
Caroline McNeer. In between those two shots, Countey saved the first Wooster attempt. The Fighting Scots made good on their next shot to push the shootout score to 2-1. Ireton then saved the next two Kenyon attempts, while Countey made one more save and watched the fourth Wooster shot ring off the crossbar.
The shootout tally remained at 2-1 and the fifth and final shooters were ready. Kenyon sent out senior
Brianna Maggard, who came through with the goal that sealed the deal for the Ladies.
Saturday's appearance in the upcoming NCAC tournament championship game will be Kenyon's second since the four-team tournament started in the 2000 season. The Ladies' last showing, in 2014, resulted in a 3-1 win against Allegheny College.
Senior Emma Klug scored twice Tuesday to help the Ladies advance past
The College of Wooster and into the NCAC tournament's championship game.
